Itinerary

Your guide and driver are with you throughout. Every day can be adjusted to your interests and pace.

Upon landing at Paro International Airport, you will be met by your Orion Bhutan Travel guide and driver for a scenic 1.5-hour drive along the highway to Thimphu, with enriching stops en route—first at Tachog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple founded by the Iron Bridge Builder Thangtong Gyalpo, where you can walk across a traditional iron-chain suspension bridge spanning the Pa Chhu River; then at Chhuzom, the sacred confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers adorned with three stupas in Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese styles; and finally upon arriving in Thimphu, ascending to Kuenselphodrang to view the colossal 169-foot bronze Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley, inside which a three-story chapel houses over 100,000 smaller gilded Buddha statues, before checking into your selected hotel for the night.

Morning begins at the National Memorial Chorten, a golden-spired Tibetan-style monument built in 1974 to honor the Third King, where you will observe elderly locals in traditional dress circumambulating and spinning prayer wheels; you then visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum to witness students training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts including painting, woodcarving, and embroidery, followed by Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum where you can try on traditional attire, sample local rice wine (Ara), and experience archery; the day concludes at Tashichho Dzong, the “Fortress of the Glorious Religion” originally built in 1216, which now serves as the government’s central administration and houses the King’s Throne Room and the summer residence of the central monastic body, with its striking white-washed walls and multi-tiered roofs exemplifying classical Bhutanese architecture, before returning to your Thimphu hotel for the night.

Leaving the capital, you embark on a scenic 3-hour mountain drive (74 km) descending into the lush subtropical Punakha valley, with your first stop at Dochula Pass (3,100 meters) where on clear days you enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayan ranges, with the ridge crowned by 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens built as a memorial to Bhutanese soldiers; continuing into the lower valley, you take a gentle 20-minute walk through terraced rice paddies and the painted village of Sopsokha to reach Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century fertility temple dedicated to the “Divine Madman” Lama Drukpa Kuenley and renowned internationally as a pilgrimage site for couples seeking fertility blessings, before settling into your selected resort in Punakha for the night.

Morning is devoted to exploring Punakha Dzong, widely considered Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress, strategically constructed in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and built entirely without nails, serving as the winter headquarters of the central clergy; you then walk across one of Bhutan’s longest suspension footbridges, draped in colorful prayer flags, spanning the Pho Chhu River with excellent photo opportunities; afterward, you embark on a moderate 45-minute uphill hike through emerald rice terraces and pine forest to reach Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a four-story stupa commissioned by the Queen Mother featuring complex tantric art on its walls, and from its open rooftop you are rewarded with unmatched panoramic views of the upper Punakha valley, before returning to your Punakha resort for the night.

As you depart Punakha, you pause briefly to view Wangduephodrang Dzong, a historic fortress commandingly rebuilt on a high ridge controlling the vital highway junction into central Bhutan; you then drive upwards for approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (80 km), leaving the subtropical climate behind as you ascend into the high-altitude U-shaped glacial valley of Phobjikha; upon arrival, you visit the grand 17th-century Gangtey Goemba, a massive Nyingma monastery anchoring the region’s spiritual identity, then set out on foot for the Gangtey Nature Trail, a gentle hike winding through blue pine forests and village farmsteads opening to pristine marshlands, and you also visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to watch an educational documentary and use spotting telescopes to observe these globally endangered wintering birds up close, before checking into your traditional lodge or hotel in Phobjikha Valley for the night.

You embark on a dramatic 3-hour journey (120 km) into the geographical heart of Bhutan, crossing the high Pele La Pass (3,420 meters), traditionally considered the boundary between western and central Bhutan, where the road winds down through alpine pastures with yak herders grazing their animals and offers magnificent mountain vistas before approaching Trongsa; upon arrival, you stand before Trongsa Dzong, the most massive and strategically imposing fortress-monastery in the kingdom, built in 1648 and sitting over a deep gorge, completely dominating the east-west trade route—by constitutional tradition, the Crown Prince must first be invested as the Penlop (Governor) of Trongsa before ascending the golden throne; you then ascend to Ta Dzong, the cylindrical stone watchtower directly above the main fortress, now transformed into a museum housing royal heirlooms, the sacred Raven Crown worn by the Wangchuck dynasty, and rare religious statues, before retiring to your selected hotel in Trongsa for the night.

Driving over the scenic Yotong La Pass (3,434 meters), you travel approximately 2.5 hours (68 km) into the four idyllic alpine valleys of Bumthang, revered as Bhutan’s spiritual heartland where the kingdom’s oldest and most sacred myths, saints, and treasures reside; en route, you stop at the Yathra Weaving Center in Chumey Valley to witness local women weaving distinctive hand-woven textiles from thick sheep’s wool, colored with natural vegetable dyes and unique to Bumthang; upon arriving in the main valley of Chamkhar, you visit Jakar Dzong, the “Fortress of the White Bird,” perched on a hillock and built in 1549, featuring a water tower designed to maintain a secure water supply during medieval sieges, before checking into your selected resort or heritage lodge in Bumthang for the night.

A spiritual morning begins at Jambay Lhakhang, one of the absolute oldest temples in the Himalayas, built in 659 AD by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo as one of 108 twin temples constructed overnight to pin down a mythical demoness obstructing the spread of Buddhism; you then visit Kurje Lhakhang, a grand three-temple complex backed by cliffs and cypress trees, named after the physical body imprint (Kur) of Guru Rinpoche preserved inside a solid rock cave from his 8th-century meditation retreat; afterward, you cross the Chamkhar River to Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in 1501 by the saint Terton Pema Lingpa, where remarkably preserved 16th-century religious paintings executed by the saint’s own hands adorn the inner walls; you then transition to secular history at the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum, built in 1857, birthplace of Bhutan’s monarchy and natal home of the First King, recently restored with 27 interactive gallery rooms showcasing courtly crafts and royal artifacts; in the afternoon, you enjoy a gourmet refreshment break at the Swiss Cheese Factory and adjacent Red Panda Beer Brewery, founded in the 1960s, where you tour the facilities and taste authentic Gouda and Emmental cheeses paired with unfiltered craft-brewed wheat beer or local apple brandies, before returning to your Bumthang resort for the night.

You drive towards the remote Tang Valley to visit Mebar Tsho, the deeply sacred Burning Lake—a river gorge where Terton Pema Lingpa jumped into the churning torrent holding a burning butter lamp and emerged hours later carrying hidden spiritual treasures (terma) with the lamp still burning brightly; continuing deeper into the Tang Valley, you discover Ogyen Choling Palace Museum, an authentic multi-generation ancestral estate transformed into a private museum offering an in-depth look at historical rural life, displaying old farming tools, ancient weapons, and religious textiles; you then return to your selected resort or heritage lodge in Bumthang for the night.

You embark on a long but scenic overland drive of approximately 7 to 8 hours as you retrace your steps westward across the mountain passes, descending from the central highlands back into the historic Paro Valley, enjoying the changing landscapes and taking rest stops along the way; upon arrival in Paro, you have a relaxed evening to adjust to the lower altitude, allowing your body to recover from the high elevations of central Bhutan, before checking into your selected resort in Paro for the night.

This day represents the ultimate pinnacle of your cultural tour as you prepare for the exhilarating 4-to-5-hour round-trip mountain hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), which clings dramatically to a sheer granite cliff face 900 meters above the Paro valley floor—holy scripture dictates that Guru Padmasambhava flew to this exact cliffside cave on the back of a miraculous tigress in the 8th century to meditate and subdue local demons, and the hike through whispering pine and rhododendron forests offers spectacular views along the way; on your drive back down to the valley, you visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the absolute oldest and most sacred shrines in the kingdom, built in the 7th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo to pin down the left foot of the giant demoness; in the evening, you indulge in an authentic Bhutanese wellness ritual—a traditional hot stone bath in a private wooden tub heated by river stones roasted over an open fire and infused with medicinal Artemisia leaves, providing the perfect remedy to soothe muscles after the hike, followed by a celebratory farewell dinner with your Orion Bhutan Travel team at your Paro resort.

After enjoying a final breakfast at your resort, your Orion Bhutan Travel team transfers you to Paro International Airport (PBH) well in advance for your onward flight, concluding your 12-day deep cultural immersion in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
